HowtoChoosetheRightIngressProtection(IP)RatingforEachSpace

When choosing a lighting product, the Ingress Protection (IP) rating is one of the most key factors in ensuring the safety, durability, and proper functioning of the luminaire over time.

In this article, we explain which IP ratings are most used, their importance and the ASLO solutions that best suit your needs.

What is the Ingress Protection (IP) rating?

The IP rating is an international classification that indicates the degree of protection of an electrical equipment against the intrusion of solid bodies (such as dust) and liquids (such as water).

This rating is composed of two components:

  • First digit: protection against solids (0 to 6)
  • Second digit: protection against liquids (0 to 8)

The higher the numbers, the higher the level of protection.

Why is it important to choose the right IP?

The proper choice of IP:

  • Extends the service life of the luminaire;
  • Avoids electrical breakdowns and risks;
  • Ensures safety in specific environments;
  • Ensures compliance with the installation site.

IP20 – Dry indoor environments

IP20 offers basic protection against contact with solid objects larger than 12mm, without protection against water.

The use of this rating is suitable in living rooms, bedrooms, offices, and interior corridors.

ASLO’s Wall Light from the Deluxe V Series is the ideal solution when looking for discreet lighting for indoor environments where there is no exposure to moisture.

IP54 – Enhanced protection indoors

 IP54 represents an intermediate level of protection and is useful in spaces where there is occasional exposure to dust or moisture, but not direct and continuous contact with water.

This level is suitable in contexts such as offices, shops, commercial spaces, warehouses, and garages.

ASLO's LED Ceiling Light from the LUNI Series is suitable for functional residential spaces that require additional protection.

IP65 – Outdoor environments and areas with high humidity

IP65 guarantees total protection against dust and water jets, being suitable for more demanding environments.

Luminaires with this rating can be incorporated into environments such as gardens, facades, terraces, parking lots, and industrial areas.

ASLO's LED Floodlight from the GLINT Series is a safe choice for spaces exposed to varying weather conditions.

IP67 – Temporary Immersion

IP67 allows temporary immersion in water, maintaining the watertightness of the equipment.

Therefore, it can be integrated into decorative areas with water, fountains, and areas subject to occasional flooding.

ASLO’s Ground Light from the FLOOR Series is suitable for specific projects that require water resistance.

Knowing the differences between the various IP Ratings helps to ensure the safety and durability of luminaires, both indoors and outdoors.

ASLO offers a comprehensive range of technical and decorative lighting solutions, designed to meet the specific requirements of every space.
