IKRating:WhatDoesItMeanandWhyIsItImportant

When choosing a luminaire, factors such as power, energy efficiency and the IP protection rating are often taken into account.

But do you know why the IK rating matters? ASLO explains!

What Is the IK Rating?

The IK rating indicates how well equipment is protected against external mechanical impacts. It is particularly relevant in industrial, commercial and outdoor environments, where equipment is more exposed to accidental knocks.

The classification consists of the letters IK followed by two digits. The higher the rating, the greater the impact energy the equipment can withstand.

IK rating

Impact resistance

IK00

No impact resistance

IK01 – IK05

0.15–0.70 joules – very low-intensity impacts

IK06

1 joule – low-intensity impacts

IK07

2 joules – moderate impacts

IK08

5 joules – higher-intensity impacts

IK09

10 joules – high-intensity impacts

IK10

20 joules – very high-intensity impacts

What Is the Difference Between IK and IP Ratings?

Although both relate to equipment protection, they serve different purposes:

  • IK rating: Measures resistance to mechanical impacts, such as accidental knocks or blows.
  • IP rating: Indicates the level of protection against the ingress of solid objects and water.

ASLO Solutions with IK Protection

ASLO offers solutions designed for different environments, combining lighting performance with mechanical resistance.

SONAR II LED High Bay Light – IK08

Suitable for warehouses, factories and industrial spaces, it combines impact resistance with highly efficient lighting. It also features adjustable power and colour temperature, allowing lighting to be tailored to the needs of each installation.

Tri-Proof Tubular Luminaire – IK10

With a higher level of mechanical resistance, this luminaire is an option for more demanding environments. It combines an IK10 rating with IP69K protection and adjustable colour temperature, offering versatility for different professional applications.

Choosing a luminaire should depend not only on the quality of light it provides, but also on the conditions to which it will be exposed.

In areas with moving equipment, material handling or greater exposure to impacts, ASLO solutions with an appropriate IK rating help reduce the risk of damage and preserve the integrity of the luminaire.
